Recchiuti Pop Up: Little Nib

Ok, so, if you’re a chocoholic and you live in the Dogpatch, what do you need? Chocolate. Fortunately, Recchiuti has finally deigned to supply the good people of the neighborhood. We don’t yet have the promised “Recchiuti Labs,” but a small room with a friendly face and shelves full of chocolate is a reasonable temporary alternative.

Little Nib is open Thursdays through Sundays from 11am through 6pm.

I have had the chocolate-covered salted caramels, and it wouldn’t surprise me if a couple guys started selling them on the corner:

“Red tops! Red tops! Got that WMD!”

Meet Me At Kentucky and Sierra

When I was trying to get the final word on when my apartment building was constructed, I found that prior to 1891, I couldn’t find any house numbers on Tennessee, and nearby buildings were addressed in relation to Sierra and Nevada.

From 1886 Langley’s San Francisco directory:
Swan John, groceries and liquors, SW cor Tennessee and Sierra

That’s the “Swan Building,” now (briefly) home to Lemon Twist.

Sierra, though? Nevada?

After hours of bleary-eyed paging through scans of city directories and maps from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, I came up with the following list of mappings:

Alameda Street still exists.
El Dorado Street is now 15th Street.
Center Street is now 16th Street
Santa Clara Street is now 17th Street.
Mariposa Street still exists.
Solano Street is now 18th Street.
Butte Street is now 19th Street.
Napa Street is now 20th Street.
Shasta Street is kind of a mystery — some maps show it, some don’t. It lines up with 21st, which doesn’t exist in the Dogpatch.
Sierra Street is now 22nd Street [edit: except for one block between Texas and Missouri — thanks, Glenn!]
Humboldt Street still exists.
Nevada Street is now 23rd Street.
Sonoma Street is now 24th Street.
Yolo Street is now 25th Street.
Yuba Street is now 26th Street.
Colusa Street is now Army Street / Cesar Chavez
Marin Street still exists.
Tulare Street still exists.

Langley maps from 1861, 1873, and 1890 show the old names, but Sanborn Fire maps from 1905 show numeric street names. Boo!

Interestingly, in 1909, many San Francisco streets got changed from numbers to various other things. Burrito Justice has that story.

In any case, I think that in 1886, a “Catherine Sullivan” was living in my building or a building next door. Since a “Thomas Sullivan” built this set of three, that implies that my apartment is from 1886 or 1887.

From Langley Directory again:
Sullivan Catherine, widow, r. W s Tennessee, bet. Sierra and Nevada

Hogan’s Goat Tavern

Hogan’s Goat Tavern
2289 3rd St
San Francisco, CA 94107

As of last January, the former owner was still trying to hang on, as explained in this brief article in the Potrero View:
http://www.potreroview.net/news10472.html

As of October, the Sea Star came under new ownership, and the owners have been spending that time renovating. Soooo, the Sea Star Club is dead, long live the Hogan’s Goat Tavern!

I peeked inside, but Christopher, one of the new owners, told me that I wasn’t allowed to photograph it — despite the whole “anything you can photograph from a public space like a sidewalk is fair game” thing. In any case, the bar was still in a state of construction, and as of Tuesday the new sign had not been hung and the old sign was lit. Going out in a blaze of glory?

Christopher has on occasion served me to deleterious effect — but I don’t blame him.

The Way Bobby Saw It

On Thursday I stopped by the Rickshaw Bagworks factory to see “the Way Bobby Sees It,” the documentary about Bobby McMullen. Bobby was on hand to crack wise and answer questions, and while he occasionally comes off as abrasive in the film, in person, he was relaxed and charming. When faced with incapacitation from his own body trying to destroy itself, he focused on what he loved: riding bikes. When asked about his favorite bike, he would reply that it was whatever bike he was on. When asked about his favorite trail, he couldn’t be pinned down, instead relaying why each place he put wheel to dirt was so fun. Thanks to Rickshaw for hosting, and to Bobby for being so positive and inspirational.

The whole film is currently available to watch on Youtube:

Lemon Twist Popup Store

If you haven’t looked at the windows of the Swan Building (the old Piccino location), you might have missed some new signage, which isn’t Recchiuti-related:

Lemon Twist

HELLO FRIEND

Always the freshest gear, always made right here.
POPPING UP: November 15 – February 29th

It looks like in addition to selling in boutiques nationwide they have already been in the neighborhood at MAC around the corner, and at a pop-up at Sutton’s Cellars, so I can’t very well welcome them to the neighborhood, or even my block. Maybe I can. Welcome!

Update:

Lemon Twist mailed a press release:

We are pleased to announce we will be opening a POP-Up Store at 801 22nd Street @ Tennessee St. from November 15th-February 29th.  We will be among great company, including: The Yellow Building (MAC, Puccini, Dig Wine Bar), Recchiuti Confections, Sutton Cellars Winery, Serpentine, Mr. and Mrs. Miscellaneous, and much more.

One Ed Won

I am not technically allowed to complain about the San Francisco mayoral election, since I somehow neglected to register to vote when I moved to The City in April, but still, I wanted my three doors down neighbor to win, just for the joy of telling the folks back home on the farm that I live on the same block as the Hells Angels AND the mayor. I guess also would have accepted Avalos as mayor because I am a stinky liberal who sometimes rides a bike, but in any case, I will make do with Ed Lee as mayor, and my neighbor as the City Attorney.

“The Way Bobby Sees It” Movie Screening at Rickshaw Bagworks

November 10th at 6PM

From https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=298397350173000

Come join us at the Rickshaw Bagworks factory for a movie screening. This is a gripping documentary about Bobby McMullen, a competitive mountain biker on a mission to race the most demanding downhill course in the country. Adding to the difficulty:

Bobby is blind. And he will be in the house!

This is an SF Bike Expo kick-off event, and we will have a raffle benefiting the McLaren Bike Park with prizes from Light & Motion, Rickshaw Bagworks, and the SF Bike Expo.

Join us for beer, snacks, and rad MTB action!

Oh, Those Jokers on Potrero Hill!

Helen Jenkins of Upper Dogpatch says in her letter to the editor of the Potrero View:

I don’t know about you, but, really, handicapped people shouldn’t even be using skateboards.

I’m hoping that this is an subtle joke.
