Man Robbed: Better The Handle Than The Blade

…but still pretty bad. Right in front of the former Potrero Police station, too.

Act. Captain Robert O’Sullivan or Ofc. E. Teper says*:

Robbery:
On November 20th at 1:30 am, a 43 year old victim was robbed in the area of 3rd and 20th. He reported the incident at 6:00 pm at Ingleside Station. He told the officers that he was walking in the area when three suspects ran up to him. One of them was armed with a knife and struck the victim in the head with the handle. The victim fell, at which point all of the suspects began to hit and kick him. The suspects stole his backpack and fled the scene on foot. After the incident, the victim went home to South San Francisco before deciding to make the police report. This incident is under investigation. (SFPD Case No. 120941354)

Sutton Cellars Joins Warehouse Sale

Don’t forget! This Saturday is the big Dogpatch warehouse sale between 3rd and Illinois on 22nd.

If the already listed vendors weren’t enough, Sutton Cellars is sweetening the pot with new cider and a digestif.

Sutton Cellars says:

We start the morning at 8am with pastries from Neighbor Bakery and will commence with wine tasting at 11am until 5pm or so. As usual we’ll have tasting for $5 and we will have special discounts on mixed cases and half cases.

Also of note – new batch of hard cider and our much awaited Vin de Noix (green walnut digestif wine) will be released this weekend.

Range Replacing Retox

The folks who own formerly Michelin starred restaurant Range have purchased Retox. My calls to their restaurant and messages to their facebook page went unanswered, but Eater SF chased down the story.

Range Team To Open New Dogpatch Bar Next Year

Eater SF says:

Now Range’s chef-owner Phil West will branch out and open a bar of his own. West has formed a new corporation called Third Rail Bar, LLC with his current bar manager, Jeff Lyon, and the pair have just finalized a deal to take over six-year-old Dogpatch bar and music venue, Retox.

News that they are not putting in a stove warms my heart.

In summary:

Headline Alliteration Hardly Amusing

With headlines, I assiduously avoid alliteration, preferring pithiness. Not so for Gizmodo, who profile a local shared workshop in an article entitled This Workshop of Wonders Makes Vibrators and Vaporizers, in which they profile Ploom and Minna.

Gizmodo says:

The [American Industrial Center], in San Francisco’s Dogpatch, is part of a neighborhood where sprawling shipyards and industrial complexes have closed up shop, replaced by the likes of the AT&T Ballpark and the UCSF Mission Bay medical research center.

This is, of course, slightly wrong, in the way that probably only irritates rules-lawyers like myself: the ballpark could be included in Mission Bay, as could UCSF’s research center, but who would call Mission Bay part of Dogpatch?

Well, really, we would. Gizmodo has provided us with documentation of our heart’s secret truth: the borders of Dogpatch extend north until you get deep into pee-smell territory (SoMa). We control the heavy industry (“tobacco” vaporizers and vibrating “marital aids”) and we control the deepwater ports. Mission Bay: you are now “Dogpatch North,” with all the rights and responsibilities that entails, except for voting in the Dogpatch elections.

* These days I only write articles so I can play with the headlines

Pier 70 Open House 2

Pier 70Principles of Place” Open House
Wednesday, December 5th from 5:30-8:00pm (presentation at 6:00pm)
UCSF Tivoli Room (third floor)
654 Minnesota Street
San Francisco, CA 94107

RSVP: http://pier70openhouse2.eventbrite.com/

Forest City is running another open house to talk about what they’ve found through community outreach so far. Everyone from their group has been exceedingly nice and I’m sure that they would like to meet you. This is your greened access to the Dogpatch waterfront, 40+ years in the making, you should probably check it out.

Forest City says:

Forest City will be holding a second Open House to showcase our Principles of Place for those who missed the event on November 8th at the Noonan Building. The evening will be focused on our values and approach to development and what we have learned so far through our community outreach process.

Building on years of community engagement by the Port of San Francisco, Forest City seeks to continue learning what makes up the local culture around Pier 70. We commissioned a Potrero-based artist, Wendy MacNaughton, to tell her own story of the neighborhood and its people – past and present. We then hosted brainstorms, one-on-one meetings, and workshops with local residents, cultural institution leaders, business owners, and community advocates to further understand their experience of the surrounding neighborhoods and see how Pier 70 could integrate and become a unique waterfront destination.

We invite you to join us at our Open House on Wednesday, December 5th from 5:30-8:00pm (presentation at 6:00pm) in the 3rd floor conference room of the UCSF building at 654 Minnesota Street to view our Principles of Place, discuss what we have learned so far and how it can shape the future of Pier 70. Please RSVP by using the link below so we have an idea of numbers.

Piccino’s New Chef

Piccino says:

Our new executive chef is here!

We are excited to introduce our new Executive Chef, Jacob Town. He comes to us from RN74 (Michael Mina Group) where he was the executive sous chef, and prior to that he was a sous chef at Spruce. A Californa native who grew up on the central coast, Jacob has been working in kitchens since he was 14 years old. His experience in the industry is deep, and more importantly his integrity and passion are exactly what we want for Piccino.

Their newsletter said that they will now be open seven days a week, and their coffee bar will be open until ten every night. They also said that to-go pizzas will soon be available, which is a little weird, since I’ve been calling and picking up to-go pizzas for months — since I’m too lazy to put on the required white tie for dinner*.

* no tie is required, but I’m sure that they’d appreciate me changing out of my pixel-stained clothes after my shift at the pixelhouse.
