Pier 70 on TV

SF has plans to develop neglected Pier 70

Somehow they fail to mention the word “Dogpatch” in the entire piece.

ABC says:

Big ships still come to Pier 70 for repairs, but other industries that once flourished there have moved on, leaving a lifeless 69-acre stretch of waterfront. The port is hoping to change that with a $242 million revitalization plan to bring thousands of people back to Pier 70.

Waaaaait a minute – I haven’t heard anything about a shipyard museum. Oh, it’s just solar kiosks with donated materials. Ok then.

Armed Robbery Attempted

The SFPD says:

Armed Robbery Attempt:

On January 23rd at 8:10 pm, officers responded to the area of 22nd and Minnesota on a call of an armed robbery. They located the 38 year old victim who told them that she was walking while dialing a number on her cell phone when a suspect approached her and demanded she give up the phone. The suspect pointed a gun at the victim as he grabbed the phone in her hand. The victim refused to let go of the phone and tussled with the suspect during which time he hit her several times with the handgun. A bystander who had been across the street and watching the altercation came to the victim’s defense. When the witness approached and yelled at the suspect to leave the victim alone, the suspect turned on him and threatened to shoot him. The suspect then ran off on foot north on Minnesota. The officers searched the area for the suspect but were unable to locate him that night. This incident is under investigation. (SFPD Case No. 130065201)

This is all over Nextdoor Dogpatch, too, which is semi-private (but also pretty cool), so I am not sure about the rules for publishing content from it.

Let’s hope that this is not the beginning of our very own wave of muggings:

Dogpatch Got Juice!

Eater SF says:

Pop-up juice bar Sōw is moving. Owners announce today that the Hayes Valley juice bar, currently located within the Pause wine bar, will move to the Dogpatch neighborhood of SF on February 2. They’ll still be a pop-up, but this time they’ll serve juices from Yield Wine Bar at 2490 3rd Street.

Bauer Awards Piccino Three Stars

Piccino growing up with neighborhood

Bauer says:

The Cal-Ital food has remained at a high level. Five pizzas are at the heart of the menu, and they are still among my favorites.

La Fromagerie sur la 3ème Rue

Pardon my French.

There’s a new cheese shop in the neighborhood, called simply “La Fromagerie.” The shop carries mostly French cheeses, some Italian cheeses, and some American cheeses like aged gouda or cheddar. They have Firebrand breads, charcuterie and special products for the holidays. They hope to offer some traditional dishes from France.

The manager is Ruben Donze, also the General Manager of Bouvet, a manufacturer of hardware for doors and cabinets.

The French Connect in Potrero

I stopped in the weekend before last to taste seven cheeses, take home three, and have a wine and cheese party at home. I am officially part of the gentrification. Tasty, tasty gentrification.

I recommend the Petit Camembert and the Antica Fattoria La Parrina guttus: a blue sheeps milk cheese from Italy. Serve them warm and breathe through your mouth.

Micro-mini-hood: South of Dogpatch

The Potrero View‘s December issue is finally online, and in it I saw mention of something of which I had heard rumors at the last DNA meeting: a splinter neighborhood called “South of Dog Patch*”. This was a little surprising, as Dogpatch itself is a splinter of the old Potrero District. I’m not sure that we need a new-new neighborhood, but I also believe that people should be allowed to choose how they are identified.

So, some folks from “the South of Dog Patch area” took shovels and rakes and implements of destruction** to clean up 25th street:
25th Street Cleanup

A prior article from the View has a moment of admiration for the live-work lofts which injected residents into an otherwise bleak and lonely area.
Newest S.F. Neighborhood Searching for an Identity

Interestly, Irish unionists sometimes refer to Northern Ireland as “the North of Ireland.” Calling it “Northern Ireland” would be an acceptance of a label applied by the ruling — well, let’s not get into all of that here.

Just remember, if we want to escape from the tyrannical oppression of Potrero Hill, we have got to stick together — we have to be “we”.
Join or die

* It really is either “Dogpatch,” “Dog Patch,” but the Howler style guide specifies all one word and no “the.” That said, no [sic] is needed for alternate expressions embedded in quotes, unless the howler author is feeling snarky.

House Hunters Here Last Year

My beautiful wife was watching House Hunters last night and the Dogpatch episode came up! Unfortunately, it wasn’t three homes here in the neighborhood — just one lovely three-level condo here, a townhouse at the end of a runway in San Bruno, and another condo near the spectacular smells of Van Ness.

The realtor blogged about it last year when it aired: Oh, the Hermanity.

He also uploaded it to Youtube for your convenience:

The couple still lives in the neighborhood, despite all the cranes.

Supes To Vote On Pier 70

The Board of Supervisor’s web site is a little funky, but it looks like the prior meeting was maybe cancelled, and the new vote to approve Orton rehabilitating most of Pier 70 should happen on Tuesday.

Going from the BOS 2012 Public Notices into the Tuesday, December 04, 2012 2:00 PM Board of Supervisors Agenda — inside that document is a link to a pdf packet about the whole Pier 70 deal, which, for a document about the waterfront, is pretty dry. Bring a canteen for your desert journey:

SLIDESHOW: Waterfront rehab planned for Pier 70 in Dogpatch neighborhood

The Examiner says:

The future of San Francisco’s dilapidated Pier 70 is coming into focus in advance of today’s Board of Supervisors committee vote on the financial terms of a planned $58.5 million rehab of historic buildings along the central, southern waterfront.

Under the deal, the Port of San Francisco would enter a 66-year lease with Orton Development to complete a $58.5 million rehabilitation of six office and industrial buildings on a 69-acre site in the Dogpatch neighborhood under what is known as the 20th Street Historic Building rehabilitation project.

SF Gate has an article too!
Plan to Bring Pier 70 Back to Life

Rumor has it that a VERY high end restaurant is slated to go into Building #102.
