Tom’s Dry Dock

Retox got sold to the folks from Range, and the Retox sign got partially taken down, revealing possibly the most fantastic dive bar sign ever.

Tom's Drydock

What can we find out about Tom’s Drydock? grepping for that address in a few Polk city directories yields the following list of businesses:

1929 CLOTHING DEALERS — MEN’S AND BOY’S — RETAIL: Peterson Bros (Fred L (Annie I) and Frank O) clo
1935 Bruno Anthony (Cath) restr
1936 Antone restr
1936 Bruno Tony (listed two ways)
1937 Martinelli Hugo (Iole) restr

1939 Antonio Bruno restr 632 20th
1940 Bruno Antonio
1942 Crenshaw Eliz restr 628 20th
1942 Olympia Cafe 600 20th

Once the directories started including reverse address lookups, we can much more easily get a picture of the block:

The reverse lookup directories also list the cross streets. Out east of Illinois there are a few paper streets that never really got put into place. (Michigan runs through the storage lot)

It looks like the tavern picked up Tom’s name in 1979 or 1980. The 1980 and 1982 editions of the directory look like they have nearly identical listings for the block:

What became of Tom, of Tom’s Drydock?

The Redding Record Searchlight says:

PANDORA, Thomas, 74, passed away on January 31, 2009 at home surrounded by his wife, family and friends. Tom was born August 6, 1934 in Portland, Maine to Christian and Carolyn Pandora. Tom joined the Navy in 1952, he was in the submarine division where he did a spy mission off the coast of Russia during Korean War, and was stationed in Hawaii for 2 1/2 years. Tom left the Navy in 1959, he was discharged out in San Francisco and remained there where he worked and later owned Tom’s Dry Dock on 22nd and 3rd for 28 years. It was during that time he met and married Joyce and they enjoyed 26 years together, traveling and enjoying their children and grandchildren. Tom loved to barbecue and feed friends, some of his happiest times were fixing corn beef and cabbage dinners on St. Patrick’s day and having friends and family over to help eat it. After retiring Tom developed a passion for old cars and was a member of the Golden Valley Street Rodders, CHVA, and a former member of Redding Rambling A’s. He was also a member of the Cattlemen’s Association. Tom is survived by his wife, Joyce; three sons, Marty (Arcelia), Rene, and Raymond (Rita); two daughters, Karen (Steve) and Lisa (Stan); two brothers, John and Philip; two sisters, Norma and Margaret. Numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Tom was a foster parent to many boys in the San Francisco area.

Tom sounds like a stand up guy.

Masked Miner Nabbed

Captain Robert O’Sullivan says:

Warrant Arrest:

On March 15th at 3:53 am, officers responded to a call of a masked suspect carrying a pick axe in the area of 20th and Pennsylvania. They searched the area and located the suspect at 17th and Connecticut. Sure enough, he had a pick axe with a large wooden handle in his possession. The suspect initially lied to the officers about his identity but later revealed his true name and admitted to having a warrant. He was placed under arrest. The suspect was booked at Bayview Station for the $10,000 narcotics warrant as well as for providing false information to an officer. (SFPD Case No. 130215365)

No word on the location of the suspect’s gold mine.

Sidewalk Chalk Archived Online

When people find out that I write a neighborhood blog, the second question they ask me is if I know anything about “the chalk guy.” Answer: not really. I’ve seen him writing, and he wrote once that his bike had been stolen — which underscores his humanity very clearly — but that’s about it.

There’s a new tumblr that collects those writings, suitable for your subscription and perusal:

I don’t know who maintains that tumblr, but I’m a little jealous.

Here is a nice video about local bartender and booze-caterer Roland Blandy making what looks to be* a delicious aged cocktail.

First the rider has to bike to Golden Gate Park, but then they quickly return home. Ratatat’s “Gypsy Threat” is no “Yakety Sax,” but it will do.

Local Hero Saves MUNI

I am going to go ahead and take credit* for MUNI service interruptions finally being put on the NextMuni LED boards. I made a service request back in April after there was some problem in the tunnel keeping the T from running. The LED boards and nextmuni.com just said that the next trains would show up in thirty or forty minutes. My walk home is about the same amount of time. Plenty of time to patiently navigate the menus of 311 and politely explain an idea: when there are problems, put them on the Nextmuni website and the LED boards.

Voilà:

This is the first time I’ve seen it in action:

Magnolia Under Construction

Hey! There’s a new interview in 7×7 with Dave Mclean!
Dave McLean Talks About the Magnolia Expansion in Dogpatch

And a pretty cool video interview!
Magnolia Dogpatch coming soon

Magnolia Dogpatch coming soon from Oct28 Productions on Vimeo.

We have, however, heard all this before, but two years ago they weren’t already pouring the floor.
Magnolia’s New Dogpatch Brewery & Restaurant Details, Set to Open in 2011

In case you missed it, the folks at Uppercasing did an inside look at the Haight location last June.
Blood and Guts: A Look Inside Magnolia

I interviewed Dave McLean a year ago*, and he said that Magnolia had beer at the Haight location and provided beer to about 20 draft accounts. To service the extra capacity, Magnolia has been working out of the same brewery as Hermitage in San Jose. Hermitage’s brewmaster, Peter Licht, is a long time trusted friend of Dave’s — they met in college at UC Davis. Unfortunately — or fortunately for us — San Jose is only a band-aid solution to their production needs. When Magnolia Dogpatch is at working capacity — 5000 barrels — that will leave the Haight for more experimental and small batch beers. The Dogpatch location has room for ten to twelve thousand barrel capacity if things go especially well.

Dave has tapped chef Dennis Lee of Namu to provide whole-animal butchery and non-denominational barbecue: neither Kansas City, Texas, nor South Carolinian, but a chance to “geek out on barbecue” like they do their beer. He had been hoping for a US-only whiskey list produced by Daniel Hyatt, but as Tabblehopper reports, Mr. Hyatt isn’t part of the Magnolia empire any more.

So, raise a glass to Dave’s amazing beard and get ready, because it can’t possibly be another year of waiting.

😉

* yes, these notes have laid around that long.

Pier 70 Master Plan Open House

Wednesday, February 13th
Noonan Building, Pier 70, Building 11, San Francisco, CA 94107
RSVP: http://pier70planopenhouse2.eventbrite.com/

Over the last year, Forest City (creators of the 5M Project) has been working on a project to rebuild a 28 acre section of the eastern waterfront of SF – due East of the Dogpatch – called Pier 70. You may be familiar with some of the great old brick buildings and the history of the area (we actually documented it with Wendy McNaughton), but most of the site is closed off, so you can’t really access the water*.

We just finished a “Master Plan” for the future of the site and are doing a tour and open house on February 13th to discuss the details.

Please join us if you interested in seeing how large areas of the city get researched, planned, and rebuilt.

We hope to see you there!

Not this master plan as referenced on the SF Port Pier 70 Master Planning page.

Really, though, I can’t find their master plan on the internet where it belongs — not even on the basically execrable http://www.pier70sf.com/ site that Forest City runs.

Wendy MacNaughton’s View of Pier 70

Wendy MacNaughton’s images, previously shown as Pier 70 In Its Own Words , are finally online in their own right. Previously they had been published online on http://www.pier70sf.com/, but you couldn’t link directly to them.
