If you weren’t aware, Poquito does a tasting on the last Friday of each month. I’m still trying to convince them to send me a nice press release a week in advance with the featured booze, but until that happens, they do usually post on Facebook the day of. Case in point…
Stop by Poquito tonight for a specialty tasting of Herradura, either in a delicious Margarita or straight up. Learn more about Tequila and its production from Herradura.
These usually run from 6 until 8.

Allow me to assist you in imagining the scene: under the austere auspices of the Veles e Vents building, a sparse crowd had gathered! With no way to see the actual race, people had congregated around a large screen! Heavily tanned gentlemen in polo sweaters were everywhere! Alinghi clowns danced among children and possibly delighted one of them! A palpable sense of boredom permeated the air!

People have been mentioning asians in dress whites roaming through the neighborhood and taking the T into the city. I’ve heard them referred to as Japanese and Chinese, but it’s the Republic of Korea‘s Navy. Bernalwood got it right. Points to Bernalwood.
Acting Police Captain Robert O’Sullivan of the Bayview Police Station said:
On Sunday, September 30, two naval vessels from the Republic of South Korea will arrive at Pier 80. The public is invited to tour the ships on Monday, October 1.
Here are their uniforms, if you’d like to see them:
This year your mother won’t have to swim out to the troop ships, because they will mostly be docking at Pier 80. In the past, naval ships would discharge their seamen all over Piers 30-32, but with America’s Cup encrusting that part of the city, Fleet Week has been forced to go down south.
October 6th – 8th, 2012. Ship Tours are free on a 1st come-1st served basis. Minimum age for Ship Tours is 8. There is parking for the Ships Tours on Pier 80.
Instead of driving, transit-first folks could take the 22 to 20th, Caltrain or the 48 to 22nd, the T to 23rd, or just walk, because the readers of this blog all live in my apartment and are probably me.
Rumors that Dogpatch is calling in its Navy to deal with neighborhood aggression from Bernal or its secessionist state La Lengua are simply unfounded. If we wanted to rattle our saber, we’d bring back the carrier.
In all seriousness, let’s welcome our men and women of the military. Every minute they are flying over or cavorting on the streets of San Francisco is a minute that they are not doing their job. Our job as citizens is to ensure that our soldiers and sailors — our brothers and sisters — do not have to use their tools for anything more devastating than setting off car alarms with awesome flyovers at high speed.

According to a confidential Howler source*, the recent fire at the old Potrero Police Station was started by a burning mattress. The cause of the mattress fire is yet unknown, but no one had recently gotten into the station. The source also related that someone from the neighborhood has been haranguing the City about the decrepit building, which the source described as “vacant, but not abandoned.”
BMSF, purveyors of the quite pleasant* “Hair of the Dogpatch” brunch popup that used to take over Yield on the weekends, are providing their M and B to Gilberth’s for sous-chef and front-of-house duties (respectively) starting next week.
So-for all of those of you that have been asking me when we are doing a new pop up; we have some news! Mike has taken the Sous Chef position at Gilberth’s Rotisserie in the Dogpatch. His new lunch menu will go into effect next week, and as usual, I will be there helping him with all things front of the house. The amazing people at Gilberth’s are giving him the opportunity to try his hand at Latin Rim cuisine. We’re really looking forward to working side by side with some incredibly talented and hard working individuals in a beautiful space in the neighborhood we’ve grown to love so much!
*I want some deviled eggs.

I finally got a chance to stop in and try their food. They’re now open one hour later: until 7pm Monday through Friday. The owners’ son said that as soon as he is done getting his degree he’ll be opening it up on weekends. So, there’s that.
Food verdict: pretty good — definitely fast.

SF Appeal ran with my recent post about 2300 Third and did some lovely research with the Department of Building Inspections, including getting copies of their emails. Note to self: learn how to request those.
In emails obtained by The Appeal, John Updike, Real Estate’s acting director, objected to being slapped with a fine by another city department and asked for relief — that is, to not have to pay the fine. But DBI stood firm.
It’s my position that the SFPD owes the fee and fines. I asked Marta A. Bayol, District General Manager of the Real Estate Division of the City and County of San Francisco, if the Board of Supervisors had voted yet. “The jurisdictional transfer has not taken place. The San Francisco Police Department still manages this building,” she replied. She has not yet answered whether or not their jurisdiction includes this particular financial responsibility.

The other day I was walking to catch the T to work and saw this notice taped to the old police station:
VIOLATION DESCRIPTION:
Failure to comply with Vacant or Abandoned Building Ordinance (194-09), which requires the following action:
The submittal of completed Application for Registration of Vacant or Abandoned Buildings and payment of initial registration fee in the amount of $765.
CORRECTIVE ACTION:
Submit completed Application for Registration of Vacant or Abandoned Buildings with initial registration fee in the amount of $765.00 plus nine (9) time penalty. Abatement procedures will begin within 30 days if registration fee plus penalties are not received.
$7650.00!
Does city employee Keith Mather have a sense of humor? I hope so.
I don’t know if this is related, but in my secret heart, I wish that it were so.
